Housing and Urban Development Corporation Ltd. (HUDCO) was established in 25th April, 1970, as a public sector enterprise fully owned by the Government of India. The principle mandate of HUDCO was to ameliorate the housing conditions of all groups with a thrust to the needs of the Low Income Group (LlG) and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).
HUDCO today has emerged as the leading national techno-financing institution with the major objective of financing/encouraging the housing activity in the country and alleviating housing shortage of all groups in rural and urban areas and also the development of urban infrastructure of various shades in human settlements.
Apart from HUDCO’s housing programmes the other areas are Infrastructure, Building Technology, Consultancy services, Research and training.
HUDCO’s contribution in its 37 years of existence though modest, is very significant. It has reached people in over 1813 towns and hundreds of villages across the length and breadth of the country with the net worth of Rs 4233 crores as on 31st march 2008.
Some of the HUDCOs innovative projects include
- Integrated railway projects at Navi Mumbai
- National games village at Bangalore
- South Asian federation games village at Chennai
- Film city at Madras
- Rehabilitation centre for social offenders at Secunderabad
- Construction of passenger jettiesat sagar island, West Bengal
- Rain water harvesting for Santhigiri Ashram, Thiruvananthapuram
- Fleet augmentation & infrastructure improvement for KSRTC and UPSRTC
- 4.5 MW biomass based power project at Ongole
Based on the sustained outstanding performance and profitability of HUDCO, the Government of India has conferred the status of Mini Ratna to HUDCO in 2004-05. The grant of Mini Ratna status provides for larger autonomy for HUDCO with powers to invest in equities as well as to form SPVs, Joint Ventures and subsidiaries.
